Albania motorcycle tours
When people speak of touring in Europe, all the familiar countries come to mind. There is one European country however, that is still considered thoroughly untouristed, and it is Albania. Isolated by its communist government until very recently, few people visit Albania. For tourism, it is considered a bit of a frontier.
Roads and Riding
In the past few years, Albanians have been very busy working on their roads. Major routes can be newly paved for long stretches, or they can be old rough road, with potholes and puddles. Minor routes are mostly rough asphalt or dirt tracks. Some of the dirt tracks can be very rutted. The roads along the spectacular coast are brand new, unless they are being worked on, and then they are dirt. There may not be many signs, especially on minor routes. The capital, Tirana, is one of the busiest capitals for traffic in all of Europe, and Tirana drivers have a reputation for being aggressive.
Climate & Environment, When to Go
Albania is covered with snow capped peaks, mountain lakes, winding rivers and lowland wetlands. It has what many consider the last large stretches of undeveloped Mediterranean coast. Years of isolation has left the country wild and truly beautiful. Albania has a Mediterranean climate, so it is pleasant in the spring and fall and quite hot, especially in the interior, during summer. As Albania is not as touristed as other European countries, avoiding the busy season is not as important as elsewhere in Europe.
Sights, People, Food and Drink
Riders on newly paved major routes, especially through the mountains or along the coast, will be treated to non-stop twisties and spectacular scenery. Albania's best feature by far is its untouched, wild and natural scenery. Albanians are descendants of the Illyrian tribes and have kept their separate identity through centuries of foreign rule, from the Romans to the Ottomans. They still preserve a distinct language and set of customs all their own. Only the younger generation speaks English. Albanians eat lamb in the mountains and seafood by the coast. Produce grown in Albania is very tasty because it is all-organic. Few Albanian farmers can afford pesticide.
